Christmas 2006 & Other Things
Yesterday we had the gig at our place, joined by my 3 kids, 2 grandkids, friends Rich, Judy, kevJuan and Vandy, and Cathy's dad, mom, Carri, Mike, Tammy, their two babes and Crystal. There were three dogs here for a while too, Angel, Gigi and Gino. Cathy and I were talking after everyone left how very lucky we are, how precious these folks are to us.
Here's a shot of the two grandbabies, Jordyn and Ryan:
Last nite I finished reading Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet In Heaven. Of his three books I've read (also Tuesday's With Morrie and For One More Day), this is my least favorite in terms of "getting it on", but the book is beautiful, and the ending is awesome and sweet. Lessons on connection are strong throughout the story. I do really enjoy Mitch's work, mostly page-turners, filled with love and wisdom for all of us.
Getting close to finishing Jimmy Carter's latest book. I see that it gets a lot of folks riled up, apparently because we are stuck on Israel in some crazy ways ($$ I think? or biblical). I've read in several places recently that the AIPAC pretty much "owns" a lot of our politicians and policies and absolutely the press. Nonetheless, it's interesting to take the time to understand what' s behind most of the craziness over there (land). And for those who want to bash Jimmy Carter, I say have at it, for one thing, he's doing SOMETHING, the lucky guy, ANYTHING to help. That's way ahead of most of the arm-chair crap I get to listen to!
Enough ranting.

Service (Take 1)
This morning, I was reading an article in the local paper about St. Vincent De Paul, volunteering, community service, etc. And, as always, I start to get a bit more focused on life, and what the heck we're all doing here, certainly what the heck am I doing here. Yesterday I was thinking about Not For Profit organizations, like Hospice of the Valley. It occurs to me that if the whole world became non-profit, service-based, wow, we're on to something. As I sit here, mostly unemployed, searching for the next big adventure, I am more and more convinced that my life will remain non-profit, service based.
It's like when I get still, I sense that my every move is one of service, my every breath, what else would I want? What else do I need? I have everything, and everything I will give to the service of the world. Feeding the dog, doing the laundry, cleaning the dishes, to bring the reverant sense of my life to these things sometimes is easier than others.
My connection with Doug (Hospice patient), the folks at Civitan, my wife, my kids, the guy at Circle K who wants some change and a cigarette. There is absolutely no end of opportunities to open up, and give. I don't have to wait! The chance to serve the homeless, the "unfortunate", this is like being in heaven, it's always there for me, perhaps I'm in heaven already, and just "forgot" or got side-tracked. Nice.

San Diego (Caveman Birthday Party)
Cathy and I went to visit the Caveman this past weekend in San Diego. On the way to the shindig we stopped in Oceanside at the pier. We stayed at the San Luis Rey Downs resort, oh yes!
Free Tacos Tomorrow
During my walk around the neighborhood this morning, somehow I remembered a funny sign at a resturant indicating that there would be free tacos tomorrow. And then, I started to go with that, and it dawned on me funnier than ever, there is no tomorrow, really. There is absolutely, no such thing as tomorrow. If it is gonna happen, it is gonna happen today. Name it, it's now or never, cuz there is no future, there is no such thing.
